Divergent – Veronica Roth

Divergent UK

I now understand the hype surrounding this book. I lost two days of my life, food and sleep included just reading it. I was absolutely obsessed with finding out what was to happen next and if any of you have read this, please comment and tell me you loved Four as much as I did?!

The individual storyline was intense, captivating and imaginative. The pace and writing style of the story was a perfect fit with the plot that I just couldn’t put the book down. Divergent has definitely encouraged me to read more dystopian novels that as soon as I finished the book I immediately picked up Insurgent to see where the story goes next. I just love the unusual setting, the intriguing characters and the gripping plot that can go in any direction amidst new worlds. Taking into consideration if this genre maintains the high level of standard I have experienced in Divergent, there is a huge possibility it could make its way to the top in my favourite genres.
One area I found interesting in the book was the exploration of emotions and the suppression of certain feelings. Seeing people forced to act in a certain way and abandon any unique qualities was intriguing. I loved how this contrasted with the main character Tris who tried so hard to blend in and become a member of any group in society that would take her yet she couldn’t contain her true self. The whole situation just mirrors society in general with the factions and factionless, it’s difficult to be different without drawing attention to yourself and creating a dangerous position for yourself.

I just loved everything about this book that I giving it a 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads and for any of you that haven’t read it, pick up the book as soon as possible. It may even be better to leave it to a read-a-thon because it’s hard to put down once it’s in your hands. Also I am unbelievably excited that there will be a movie released in April of Divergent. I am so intrigued to see how they portray the landscape, the relationships and the small details that define each factions or living quarters.

Divergent is also another book included in the Chunkster Reading challenge encouraging me to read more books over 450 pages. So far this month I have read two out of the 10 I am hoping to read before the end of the year.

If you haven’t read this book, give it a read. If it doesn’t sound like your type of book, give it a read. I can’t express how good this was. Or even watch the trailer below and hopefully it will encourage you to pick it up.
