I mentioned in a previous post that I was reading this book despite it being set at Christmas time but I was definitely misled. This book begins at Christmas time but spans out over a year. I enjoyed reading a book that began at Christmas time with the traditional family gathering and meal that announces the twist in the plot. After this I enjoyed following the life of Lizzy through the seasons as she attempts to overcome the problems within her own life and the family’s. I found it particularly enjoyable to read a book that develops with the seasons and while I am snuggled on the sofa not knowing whether tomorrow will bring the first day of Spring or another day or Winter.
Going Home is a fun book with lots of interesting characters and relationships circling the main plot. I really enjoyed the plot of this book and the main character Lizzy who embodied the everyday woman’s thoughts and how to overcome problems. Not only did this book adventure into Lizzy’s life but it gave an interesting insight into the life of her family which made me laugh at times because it was crazy and loving and described perfectly the general family. Throughout the book you get to know her family members and all about their personalities and life, so you get a feel for all aspects of Lizzy’s life and the surroundings that moulded her into the character she is.
I found some parts of the book a struggle and a little slow but this could have just been me. Some of the conversations and even the exciting sections were a little long and I found some of them to be dragged out a bit too much. I hate to admit it but in some sections I lost concentration because they were over descriptive or lengthy. This is no reflection on the plot and probably more to do with my lack of patience than anything so I hope this doesn’t put you off if you were considering the book.
Overall I really enjoyed Going Home by Harriet Evans, I found it interesting and particularly enjoyed the family personalities and London life of Lizzy. Over on goodreads I am giving this book a 3 out of 5 stars. I would have given it a 4 if I hadn’t have lost concentration in some parts, however as I said before don’t let this put you off as every reader is different.
