Vampire Academy – Richelle Mead

I am very late in noticing this series as it originally came out in 2007. However I am so glad that I have started reading it because it was very good. Vampire Academy was fast-paced, exciting and not exactly what I expected. Yes there are the dramas of teenage girls but once you mix in powerful figures and vampires, expect for it to get ten times better.

The plot focuses around Rose Hathaway, a 17 year old Dhampir and guardian in training for Lissa Drogomir, a Princess and Moroi. They are best friends but share a very special bond not only as Rose is Lissa’s guardian but in ancient traits also. As they are captured and taken back to the Academy, they are thrown into routine once again with their fellow students. However nothing is as it seems and suddenly they face much bigger problems than the Strigoi, the undead vampires.

I really loved this plot and the characters. In particular I liked Rose, she is such a strong character who really looks out for Lissa and works hard to remain as her guardian despite being back at school and having different classes. Lissa as well is a very intriguing character who seems to have a lot of background struggles as she adjusts to being back at the Academy but this only heightens the plot and the relationship she has with Rose. I love the girls and their relationship and I really can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

Set in St Vladimers Academy which looks like an old, haunted castle, this plot has a really modern take on a classic idea of vampires. Richelle Mead takes the century’s old and European idea of vampires and throws it into the mix of high school. Although it sounds something similar to Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, this book focuses on completely different aspects and the main characters are two very strong females who appear on the outset as independent and focused. As the plot unravels this is tested alongside their friendship and need for one another.

I really enjoyed Richelle Mead’s writing style and found it very easy to fly through chapter after chapter without seeing the hours pass. The pace of the writing really complemented the plot and there seemed to be something happening as every page turned. I really enjoyed this book and easily gave it a 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads. It’s hard to fully explain the quality of this book without spoiling it for future readers but if you love a good drama filled fantasy with vampires then this is the book for you. I really want to read the entire series so I think I will try my best this year. Let me know what you think if you have read it or if you have seen the movie, is it worth watching?

The reason I picked it up was because of all the good reviews too? Definitely move it to the top of your TBR and get started! Let me know what you think of it, it will be hard to put down 😄

I found VA when I was 17 (in 2007) and have loved watching the series grow. I try to get everyone I meet to read it. If I had could be a book character, I would be Rose Hathaway.

That is amazing, I wish I could have read the first one when it came out and followed the series from then, it would have been very exciting waiting on each book. I do love Rose, she is such a strong character and I’m really excited to see where the series takes her. 😊
