Saga Volume One – Brian.K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

This is a graphic novel series that I have had my eye on for a few months now after spotting it on goodreads. I finally bought it last week and started reading it over the weekend and have been hooked from then. It follows the story of two soldiers from opposite ends of the galactic battlefield who fall in love and who’s relationship causes a problem throughout the course of the plot.
The plot is told in an unusual but intriguing way. As with any graphic novel there is dialogue between the characters which guides quite a lot of the action but interestingly there are comments throughout from the baby. Marko and Alana, the two love stricken opponents struggle through the galaxy to save their baby, Hazel and as the plot develops there are comments from her about significant parts of her early life. It becomes even more addictive because at the back of your mind you know that the plot develops into much more. Hazel is alive but what age is she when she is narrating these parts of her life, do her parents make it and what happens to their homes and the war?
One aspect I really enjoyed about this novel are the introductions to the characters. There isn’t an overbearing number of characters brought into the plot which is good because the characters that are introduced all have their own backstory that intertwines with the main plot line. Only from the first volume I like all of the characters and want to know more about their lives and what direction they go in, from royalty to bounty hunters and to the main characters, Marko, Alana and Hazel.
As a Sci-Fi set novel I particularly enjoy the other-worldly or should I say other-galactic dimensions of this novel. As the plot is accompanied by images this makes the novel so much more addictive. The unusual plot and look of the characters are beautiful and the different settings make it all more a wonderful read. Visually it is beautiful and there is no denying that the plot ties in perfectly with the images.
Overall I am giving this graphic novel a 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads because the plot was intriguing and addictive, it was visually beautiful and I am excited to get the next volume and see what direction the plot goes in. I especially want to know what happens to Hazel and her parents and if they escape the clutches of those chasing after them.
I would definitely recommend this to any avid readers who enjoy graphic novels. In saying this I am late into the trend and I’m sure most readers will have already came across this series. Regarding the images, plot and language I would recommend this graphic novel to late teen or adult readers but then again individuals will know what suits them best. Well worth the read, so pick it up!
