Bruce Springsteen is a man of mystery to me, I don’t know much about him but I do know some of his songs but mostly the hits. I wanted to read his book to get to know him because he is such an intriguing person and one that seems to have tons of personality. His biography really shocked me because he came from humble beginnings and managed to maintain this kind, caring and generous persona through his life as a rock star.
This biography follows the standard style from life as a child, growing up and right up to the present day, it captures particular memories such as learning to play guitar, stories of his wife and children and his religious beliefs. I knew nothing about him before reading this book and it has led me to respect him and want to listen to his music. I think now I can understand where his inspiration comes from and the life that turned him into the man he is today.
Although I didn’t know all of the songs mentioned in the book, I loved how he broke them down and talked about how he got the inspiration for them. He is a real worker, writing his own songs and taking the lead on band decisions. I really liked reading what he had to say about other famous musicians at the time such as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, not to mention playing at some of the most well renowned venues worldwide.
I think this book would definitely appeal to rock and roll fans and no doubt fans of Springsteen. I actually have a friend who is a massive fan and has no doubt read this, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he knew most of what is in the book already. There is a charming element to this book and how it juxtaposes his family life with his music career and the up and downs of both. No detail is spared and there is a lot of honesty and truth in the writing. I think it would be a great book to listen to on audio narrated by Springsteen himself because I can just imagine the emotion he would convey when reading some of his own stories.
I found it really difficult to rate the book out of 5 because you can’t really mark the plot because it is what it is. What I can say though is the writing, the honesty and the sheer quality overall had me giving this book a 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a great insight into a legend of our time and The Boss in a rock star world.
